Lázaro is a ragged boy forced by poverty to work as a servant. The innocent, and sometimes justified, mockery with which Lázaro defends himself against his masters is punished with brutal cruelty. Thus, blow by blow, the simplicity and credulity of Lázaro in the opening pages give way to the sagacity and cunning of the most classic and typical of rogues.
