Written by a classroom teacher, this book provides an instructional approach to teaching students the structures of expository text in Grades 3–8. Using graphic organizers to visually depict the structures, the author takes a close look at seven patterns or structures: sequence, enumerative, compare/contrast, cause/effect and problem/solution, description, and question/answer. The book illustrates how to introduce children from Grades 3–8 to different text patterns or structures to assist them in both their reading and writing of expository text. Additional chapters examine the reading/writing connection; signal words; and essay writing. Designed as a teacher resource tool, lesson approaches, text samples and evaluation tools are provided as blackline masters in the book.
