1887. It's the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Eighteen-year-old Louisa Marchington, a headmaster's daughter who's trying to find her place in local society and the world at large, is caught up in the celebrations. She meets George Jevcott, a baker's apprentice, who has ambitions to one day become master of his own establishment. However, before long they're both faced with obstacles to overcome, and decisions to make that affect their families as well as themselves.
